We are currently recruiting for a HLTA in a small independent special educational needs school. The school is located in the Dorking area and caters for pupils aged 11 to 16 who that experience a range of needs including autism spectrum conditions and associated behaviours. You will be joining a team that take a positive approach to support behaviour and understand that all behaviour is a form of communication, they aim to manage this with compassion whilst maintaining a safe environment.

The ideal candidate will need to demonstrate a passion for the holistic development of young learners. Use a human first and educator second approach understanding that the pupils experience in mainstream education may have been a difficult one.  You will need to have a consistent and firm approach to challenging behaviour as well as having the skills to build meaningful relationships with the pupils. Be able to work in a fast-paced environment and willing to think on you feet so that all the pupils can meet their full potential.

Your roles and responsibilities include:

  • Leading in the absence of any Class Teachers across the school whilst provide high quality, challenging and differentiated educational activities aiming at pupils achieving their full potential in all areas of learning.
  • Assist the Class Teacher with carrying out the professional duties of a teacher as outlined in the Professional Standards for Teachers.
  • Monitor pupils conduct and behaviour throughout the learning process and intervene to resolve highly complex, difficult, or very challenging issues and to keep records of incidents, health, behaviour etc. as necessary. Physical intervention training will be provided.
  • Take responsibility for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of pupils according to the school’s policies, including safeguarding.
