Masterclass Education are working with an amazing SEN secondary school who are currently recruiting for an SEN teaching assistant to join them after Christmas.
A Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant in a secondary school plays a crucial role in supporting students with a variety of learning, emotional, or physical challenges. Here’s an overview of the key responsibilities and skills needed for this role:
Key Responsibilities:
- Supporting Individual Students:
- Provide tailored support to students with Special Educational Needs, which may include learning difficulties, physical disabilities, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, sensory impairments, or social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs.
- Assist students with completing classroom tasks, understanding instructions, and engaging with learning materials.
- Support students in developing social skills, managing their behaviour, and improving emotional regulation.
- Collaborating with Teachers and Other Professionals:
- Work closely with teachers to adapt lesson plans, activities, and resources to meet the individual needs of students with SEN.
- Communicate with other professionals, such as speech and language therapists, educational psychologists, or external agencies, to ensure a holistic approach to student support.
- Attend and contribute to SEN review meetings to track student progress and set new learning goals.
- Supporting Classroom Management:
- Help maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment by managing student behaviour and promoting positive social interactions.
- Provide one-to-one or small group support during lessons to reinforce learning.
- Encourage and motivate students, offering praise and rewards to build their confidence and self-esteem.
- Monitoring Progress:
- Keep records of student progress, noting their strengths and areas for improvement.
- Assist with assessments or tests where necessary, ensuring that students with SEN have access to the necessary accommodations (e.g., extra time, alternative formats).
- Identify any new needs or concerns that arise and communicate them to the SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator).
- Supporting Independent Learning:
- Foster students’ independence by helping them develop strategies for managing their learning, organizing their work, and staying focused.
- Use assistive technology or resources where appropriate to enhance learning opportunities for students with SEN.
- Support students in the development of life skills, particularly for those with more significant learning needs or those transitioning to adulthood.
